Christopher Wyze & The Tellers Bring a 1928 Blues Classic Back to Life in New Single “I’m Going Back To Tennessee”

He and his band, Christopher Wyze & The Tellers, have heroically revived the work of two Indianapolis blues musicians from nearly a century ago, who believe “city blues” pioneers Leroy Carr and Scrapper Blackwell deserve far more attention. And he’s stirring that up with his band’s cover of the duo’s 1928 song “I’m Going Back to Tennessee”. The recording is a tribute to Carr/Blackwell and part of Wyze’s larger effort to keep their music circulating, especially for listeners who may know little about these once-famed musicians or their story.

For Wyze, the connection hits close to home. Leroy and Scrapper came from his hometown, yet Wyze has been struck by how unfamiliar their story remains, even among musicians around Indianapolis. That lack of recognition became the motivation behind Wyze’s ambitious project, two years in the making, and recorded in Indianapolis at the historic Postal Recording studios. Wyze wants more people to hear the music of Carr and Blackwell and know the bluesman behind it.

His research into their lives and music has also turned up new leads. Wyze uncovered information about Carr and Blackwell’s initial introduction in 1928, along with word of telegrams belonging to Carr that could provide another glimpse into his life. Those discoveries have fueled Wyze’s zeal for learning more about Leroy and Scrapper as he continues to follow whatever pieces of the story remain and see where they may lead.

That work returns to their music in “I’m Going Back to Tennessee.” In the song, Carr’s writing comes across plainspoken and direct: the story of a man rejected, left alone, who decides it is time to go. “Gonna pack my trunk and go back to Tennessee” becomes the song’s central resolve, while the verses move through heartbreak, distance, hard travel and the determination to keep moving. The repeated lines give the lyric its persistence. Hurt runs through the song, but so do pride and resolve, especially as the narrator prepares to travel a “long hard road” and carry the load himself. Even after being turned away, he keeps his footing, ending with the determination to get back to Tennessee even if it takes his last dime.

At the heart of the cover are Carr and Blackwell – once famous blues recording stars who produced nearly 200 recordings in their brief eight-year career: 1928-1935. Wyze doesn’t simply revisit an old blues number; he uses the band’s recording and distinctive sound to point listeners back toward the musicians who created it. As the research into Leroy, Scrapper, and their story continues, “I’m Going Back to Tennessee” gives their music another chance to reach people who may never have encountered it—and keeps their names in the conversation of jazz-era recording stars.

The accompanying lyric video from HIP Video Productions keeps the period feel intact. Footage from the 1920s and 1930s plays through an old, fuzzy tube television, giving the video a worn, aged appearance while keeping Carr’s words and Wyze’s vocals front and center.
