Working in one of North America’s most remote and environmentally demanding settings, Sherwood helped transform an ambitious vision into a regenerative civic landscape where engineering and ecology function as one system in pursuit of the Living Building Challenge Water Petal.

Rather than resisting the site’s extreme hydrology, Sherwood’s approach works with it. Stormwater is slowed, spread and absorbed through terraces, prairies and natural conveyance systems that mirror how water historically moved across the Badlands. Each rainfall event activates the landscape, strengthening this rare and delicate ecosystem. Each rainfall becomes part of the landscape’s renewal, revealing infrastructure not as something hidden beneath the ground, but as an active participant in the visitor experience.
